"WE'RE ON TRACK"

GOVERNOR’S REPORT - April 1st, 2006

DAVID G. ORR
Previous District Governor Bill Brown is unable to finish his term as District Governor for District 17-K1, due to illness.  He has now moved to District K7 and I am sure he would appreciate your cards and letters. K1 held a Cabinet Work Session recently to plan our upcoming Cabinet Meeting April 29th in Burlington, Kansas.  I have been corresponding quite a bit with Lion Debbie Greve who will be continuing as our Newsletter editor.
Due to the request of the PDG’s, I have assumed his duties effective March 15th.  This means my term is starting early. I have also asked Debbie to be Zone Chairperson for her District Region Three - Zone 1 she also will continue as President of the Pittsburg Club.
Over this past season, even with the illness of our District Governor our train has not derailed since our District has increased membership this year and thanks to all who helped make this happen.  So, keep up the good work, fellow Lions! Since that same Region Three – Zone 1 has had a vacancy PDG Don Matlock will fill it till the end of this term. While on that subject I would like to remind everyone that PDG Fred Sprang in Baxter Springs will be hosting a Zone Social on April 24th, 2006 at 6:30PM.
Since becoming Acting District Governor for 17 K1, my wife, Cheryl and I have attended the Colony Lion’s Club Pancake Feed and I gave my first speech as DGE  at the Iola Lion’s Club meeting. Before closing I would like to give a Big THANK YOU! To the PDG’s and Officers who helped me pick up and hit the TRACK running, PDG Don Matlock, PDG Don Cunningham, PDG Chris Bauer, and Officers Gene Allen and Bill Loyd.
At the end of March PDG Don Matlock and I shot out of the door to try to make it to the clubs that process of attending clubs that will have lights-out in the summer. I no more than took office and the tornado hit the ground.  We applied and received a Lions Disaster Grant from President Ashok Mehta to help southeastern Kansas victims of the storm Thursday, March 25th.
One of the clubs Don and I attended was Ark City’s morning club, which is at the farthest point of my District.  We will be attending the evening meeting there, April 10th.  I ran up and down the road with PDG Don Matlock to attend several Lions Clubs meetings and the lights were out as we were using an old schedule book.  Thank the LORD and LCIF Foundation came through! We were issued a $ 7,500 dollar grant to help with blankets, bottle water and other emergency supplies. Please Contact me at dg@lions17k1.org if you need help?
The first of April, Cheryl & I attended the District Governor Elect Training in Wichita at State Headquarters.  We enjoyed meeting the other District Governor’s Elect’s for the upcoming year. Be sure and check-out the Event Calendar in our PAW TRACKS to see where we will be next? “We’re a Movin’”
We also attended the Parson’s Lion’s Club 75th Anniversary Celebration April 1st with International Director Ernie Young as guest speaker and Council Chair Rudy Pouch. It is my hope and intent over the next year to motivate and create new vision for District 17-K1.  I too will be embarking upon Vice President Jimmy Ross’s slogan,   So, get ready to “Get on Board our Train,” as we start to light a fire in our boilers and start steaming down the track to success.

As, our next year’s slogan for the District 17-K1 2006 – 2007 is “We’re on Track!”

LIONS CLUBS INTERNATIONAL GRANTS DISASTER RELIEF FUNDS TO SOUTHEAST KANSAS TORNADO VICTIMS Last week Governor Kathleen Sebelius declared a state of disaster emergency in Montgomery County.
Acting District Governor of Kansas Lions District 17-K1, David G. Orr, of Chanute, Kansas announced today that the Lions Clubs International has approved $7,500 in disaster relief he requested to help victims of the tornado that hit southeast Kansas last Thursday night, March 30th. The Lions Club of Independence Kansas has formed a Committee to disperse the funds which includes: President, Tom Henricks; Treasurer, Paul Fairbank; Incoming President, Bill Caflisch; and Secretary, Don Matlock.
Through the Lions Club organization District Governors are able to apply for disaster relief and receive the funds within 48 hours of a disaster in their district. This committee will work with other area groups, such as the Red Cross, to identify those persons who are most in need of assistance. Assistance will be offered with vouchers for items such as food, clothing, water, medical supplies, kitchen supplies, and blankets.
The tornado touched down in Havana, southwest of Independence and traveled northeast. It damaged shelters, trailers and RV’s at Elk City Lake and also hit the community of Le Hunt, just northeast of Independence. Several homes and mobile homes were destroyed and damaged. At least one person was severely injured. The LCIF Foundation has sent many millions is disaster relief to Kansas through the years, far outstripping the dues from area Lions clubs to Lions Clubs International. The Parsons, Franklin and Arma area received monies from LCIF at the time of their tornado a few years ago. The Lions Motto is “We Serve”

Contributions to help the storm victims may also be mailed to the Exchange State Bank, 108 E. St. John, Girard, Kansas, 66743, in care of William F. Loyd, District 17-K1 Treasurer.

This is one of many ways that dues to International help our local clubs and communities.

PARSONS LIONS CELEBRATES 75TH ANNIVERSARY

1931 to 2006

Katy had to bar the door to keep the old railroaders on April 1st, when the Parsons Lions Club celebrated their 75th anniversary.

Some 100 hobos and their spouses came together at the First Baptist to feast on hobo stew, cornbread, hors’deuvres, and anniversary cake and punch.

The railroad theme was used throughout as bandanas served as napkins and candles in coffee cans lit the tables. The stew was served on tin plates.

Kansas Council Chairman, Rudy Pouch introduced International Director, Ernest Young, Jr. who was the guest speaker. ID Young also presented The President’s Certificate from the Lions International President Ashok Mehta, to Lion Verna VanCleave for outstanding achievement, leadership, and years of service to the Parson’s Lions Club. Jaime Nelson, grandson of Lions Verna & Kenneth VanCleave provided entertainment with his Cowboy poetry.

50th Anniversary Celebration & Zone Social

PDG Don Matlock Membership Chair Report

The Kincaid Lions Club will host a shared celebration on Thursday, April 20, 2006 at the Kincaid Selma United Methodist Church, 5th & Martindale, Kincaid, beginning at 7:00 p.m.   Dinner will be $10.00 per person.  RSVP to President Tom Herynk at 620-439-5447

The Membership is working great this year as we are up at this time with a big plus for the District. But the work is not over, as we need to keep going with the program of getting New Members.

Whatever your club has done, keep doing it ‘cause for the most part all clubs are gaining new Members.

Most of you know that at the beginning of the year “The MERL TEAM” put a program in place. We thought that this was a fair way to do it. We broke the Clubs up in three different groups. They are 21 and below, 31 and below and above 31.

State convention a good ole’ time planned in Southeast Kansas.

If you started with 21 members you had to keep that many for the year. Then the club with the most percentage will win in each group, up to three places. The winners will get $75, $50, and $25 for their work. This can be put into your Administrative Account.

An Invitation from the State Convention planning committee

You still have until May 31, 2006 to win. Some clubs don’t really need that many new members to win. So, if you want to help your club and the District at the same time, get out there and get new Members.
The 85th Annual Kansas Lions State Convention is planned for June 1-3 and it won’t be the same without you! Pittsburg Lions club with the eager assistance of five other Lions clubs in southeast Kansas (Baxter Springs, Chanute, Columbus, Girard, Parsons, and McCune) are busy preparing what they hope will be a great start to your summer and the 2006-07 Lions year. I hope that this program is able to be carried over to next year as Our new Governor will be working to get the District above the 1250 members. I know that this could be done if everyone would just get One New Member for the year.
PDG Chris Bauer and Don Cunningham with acting DG David Orr planning for District Meeting to be 4/29/06
I go around the District and ask people if they have been asked to join the Lions. They say, “No.” It is up to the Clubs in that town or Community to ask them. I know I ask every day for someone to join. Yes, I get turned down most of the time, but I also have asked again and again and the same person said,
“Yes.” It is up to you, to help make this work. Where do you want this District to be in the next decade?

I don’t want anyone to think that I am not proud of the work all of you have done for the District. ‘Cause I am Proud. We are still the Best District in the State. There is only one District above the 1250 mark and that is K7. But they are way down on their numbers too. But look how many people they have living in their area to get more members from than the rest of the Districts.

So, I hope that each of us have A great Year. “Governor Dave” I hope that we all do our best to make your Year a great one. My goal for the next Year is to have at least 1300 total members. I know this sounds like a lot, but if you stop and think about this, it is not, ‘cause that is just 139 new members.
Thanks you all for letting me be your Membership Chair for this year and for all the hard work that you have done. Keep up the good work!

CLUBS IN THE NEWS
Ark City Roaring the Loudest:

Ark City Bound:  I really enjoyed the visits with the Ark City Clubs, the Morning Early Birds and the Evening Club.  As I have been doing my speeches, I have been asking the clubs to do “projects with a passion.”

If you are a Lion and find yourself with some extra time May 6th love to fish, and like sharing your experience with the youth of today, you may want to journey to Ark City and team up and volunteer your time and expertise. Call the Rec. Office at (620) 441-4300.

I promise that this may be contagious and fun may be turned to fun and community spirit and create new members inside your club.  The lesson being that being a Lion can be fun as well as help the community.

I find when people are in charge and are doing something that they enjoy doing, the projects end up being done the best, as well as with more energy. So, it may be time to abandon those old “blah” type projects and fund raisers and jump on board to some body else’s passion.  By that energy it may become your passion.  Although fund raisers become easier to do with each passing year, they can also after a period of years become stale and routine.  The last few years both Ark City Clubs, led by the Evening Club have jumped on board to help the Recreation Center put on their annual fishing tournament.  This year will be unique and meaningful because Sergeant Jerry Mills, Junior, a local young man, who always enjoyed hunting and fishing, passed away fighting for our country in Iraq.  This year’s tournament will be called the Sgt. Jerry Mills Jr. Fishing Derby in his memory. While visiting in Ark City we had two new Lions sign up and I like to believe they signed up due to the energy in the air that night related to what was coming up for the future of that club.

One of the things I would like to take a line from a movie is; “Show me the money!”  In this case the saying is “Show me innovative projects!” and I will show you new members.

Potential new members want to see a club in action.  They want to see what the point is in belonging.

If you have members who are negative and can’t see the forest for the trees and vote “No” to any new ideas, you may be on a downward spiral.  If you have members who “never say never” you have a club that can shoot up in membership like a rocket.

His father, Jerry Mills, Sr., knew that his son loved fishing so much and loved teaching children to fish, went out and bought hundreds of rods and reels to give to the community young people.

People want to hang around with people who are successful, so make your club a success, follow in Ark City’s paw prints and start a new project today.

Also coming up in Ark City is a New Member Induction Picnic on their regular meeting night, April 24th at the Walnut River Park.  I encourage any Lion to join in with their fellowship and fun.  Contact Irving Kramer if you plan to attend.

The same evening there will be a Zone Social at Baxter Springs 6:30 PM, April 24th. Lion DGE Nancy and Acting Zone Chairman Don Matlock will be present so BE THERE!

ADG DAVE

Everyone in the community is rallying around the Lions and the Recreation Center, offering their time and energy to help with this fishing tournament for kids. In the first three days of registration, they have already signed up over a hundred children.

Sponsors include:  Ark City Recreation Center; Mike Simpson Crappie Magic.com; Lions & Lioness & Leo Clubs; Pass It On! Big Brothers Big Sisters; Man & Pa Kettle; Brown’s Bait & Tackle Shop; and Jerry Mills, Sr.
